Best way to keep your gardens tools from rusting?
Jonathan Asked:
Best way to keep your gardens tools from rusting? I've heard about using a bucket of sand and motor oil, but that sounds like creating toxic waste to me.
Reply:
Keeping them clean and using WD 40 or mineral oil even vegetable oil. Even using vegetable oil in the sand bucket is good. Just make sure to remove the heavy part of the dirt before putting them in the bucket and then push them up and down to remove the rest. If you have a lot of rust use white vinegar to help remove the rust or even steel wool.
For wooden handles always use linseed oil. Once a year or twice sand the handle to smooth and soak it good with linseed oil.
If you have fiber glass handles just wash with soap and water and dry.

Ask your friends if they have a bench grinder in their garage. If not, try your local hardware store (like a Hardware Hank or Ace).

Wipe them down with light weight oil and do the same after each use.
Did you call them to tell them they are there? Maybe they have forgotten which house they were working on at the time.
If you call and they don't come:
Keep the tools, call the rental company (name will be on the mixer somewhere) and tell them to come get their mixer.

Does anyone know if new chains have to be sharpened before use? I was using a Makita U4030A almost every week for two years and it was cutting pine like butter. I purchased a new Oregon chain from home depot and now it doesnt cut anything. It just heats up. The chain spins and is installed correctly and its the correct size. If you know whats wrong let me know.

A hand file is totally uncontrollable as far as how much you cut off each tooth, proper angle, etc. A GOOD electric chain sharpener with GOOD wheels that are PROPERLY dressed for the proper chisel profile, will produce a chain as sharp as brand new. Properly setting your limit stops on the first tooth will ensure that every tooth is cut identical. This keeps the chain from chattering or sidewalking when cutting.
